BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity golf team stayed on an early season roll this week, taking first in two Bayside South conference matches, but it appears it will be neck-and-neck with Bennett and maybe even Parkside throughout the year.
Bennett edged Decatur in the season’s opening match last week, but the Seahawks have come back to take first in the last two conference matches. Last Thursday, Decatur shot a team-low 161 to take first place in the second match of the year at the Bay Club. Bennett was second with a team score of 163.
Decatur’s Matt Kristick and Bennett’s Ayden Whitehead each shot an even par 36 to lead their respective teams. Parkside finished third overall as a team, but Jakob Eidel shot a one-under 35 to earn the medal in the match at Bay Club.
On Tuesday, the Seahawks won again at the third match of the year at River Run. The Seahawks shot a team-low 163, led by Matt Kinsey who shot a 36. Bennett finished second with a 167 and Parkside finished at 171. Kinsey and Parkside’s Kyle Littleton each shot a 36 at River Run and shared co-medalist honors.
After three matches, Decatur leads the conference standings with two wins and a team score of four. Bennett is a close second with a score of five and Parkside is lurking close with a team score of nine. The standings are based on one point for a win, two points for a second-place finish, three points for a third-place finish and so on.
