BERLIN- The hits just keep coming from Stephen Decatur varsity baseball standout Justin Meekins, who is in Oklahoma this week competing for Team Maryland in the Heartland Baseball Classic.
Meekins, a junior at Decatur, just finished a remarkable season for the Seahawks and earned Bayside South Player of the Year honors. He batted an astounding .533 during the season with 18 RBIs, six doubles and four triples. Perhaps more important than his offensive numbers were his steady leadership and outstanding defense from the shortstop position all season. Meekins, who has accepted a scholarship from the University of Maryland after his senior year at Decatur, was also named to the Maryland State Association of Baseball Coaches All District 8 team along with teammates Nick Bennett and Grant Donahue. Donahue was also named Bayside South Pitcher of the Year.
Meekins, who plays on various travel teams and other leagues throughout the year, was heavily recruited by other Division I schools before deciding on Maryland. He is currently playing for Team Maryland at the Heartland Classic in Oklahoma this week and is one of only a few juniors on the senior-laden high school All Star team. Team Maryland got off to a fast start on the first day of the tournament this week, beating Oklahoma, 6-5, and Georgia, 8-1, on Tuesday.
