BERLIN- After a dramatic win in its post-season opener on Monday, Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity basketball team hit the wall on Tuesday, falling to Howard, 67-33, in a turnover-filled game to close out what was otherwise a remarkable season.
The second-seeded Seahawks earned a first round bye in the state Class 3A-East region tournament and opened the post-season with a home game against Wilde Lake on Monday. Decatur took control of the game early, building an 11-4 lead halfway through the first quarter. Wilde Lake made a late run in the second quarter and cut the Seahawks’ lead to 24-18 at the half.
Decatur led for much of the second half, but couldn’t quite finish off pesky Wilde Lake, which tied the score at 44-44 with just under three minutes left in the game. Decatur’s Dayona Godwin settled the issue with a basket at the buzzer to give the Seahawks a 48-46 win, touching off a wild celebration. Godwin led Decatur with 14 points, while Abbey Schorr finished with 11 points and 15 rebounds.
The dramatic win propelled the Seahawks into the second round and a match with Howard. However, Decatur struggled out of the gate and fell behind 21-2 early after Howard went on a 17-0 run. Howard led 25-4 after the first quarter as Decatur continued to turn the ball over. The Seahawks never recovered from the rough start and fell to Howard, 67-33, to end a strong season.
