Worcester Girls Win First ESIAC Crown

BERLIN- Worcester Prep’s girls’ varsity field hockey last week completed a remarkable season, beating rival Saints Peter and Paul, 3-2, in the Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference (ESIAC) tournament championship game for its first-ever title.

The Mallards went 12-2 overall on the year including a 7-1 ESIAC mark to win the regular season title. In the conference tournament, the Worcester girls beat Holly Grove, 2-0, in the semifinals and then edged Saints Peter and Paul, 3-2, in the conference tournament championship game.

Worcester was led by the only senior on its roster, goalkeeper and co-captain Claire Brown, who was named the Mallards’ MVP and was also the top-ranked goalie in the conference. Brown recorded 37 saves and allowed just three goals all year in conference play. Worcester’s other goalkeeper, Maddy Pilchard, recorded 13 saves during the season. Combined, Brown and Pilchard allowed just 10 goals all year in 14 games for the Mallards.

Worcester was no less impressive on the offensive end during the championship season. Co-Captain Meg Lingo scored 16 goals and dished out three assists and was named ESIAC Player of the Year. Jordie Loomis scored six goals and two assists, Co-Captain Sarah Arrington scored four goals and dished out 12 assists, Allie Greer had four goals and four assists. Loomis, Arrington and Greer were each named to the ESIAC first team.

Caroline Lindsay scored eight goals during the season and earned Worcester’s Coaches Award. Carolyn Dorey was named Most Improved. Hannah Esham and Maddy Stearns were named to the ESIAC second team, while Natalie Twilley and Libby Truitt received honorable mentions. Worcester Prep also won the ESIAC Sportsmanship Award, and Coach Jenny Frostrom was named Conference Coach of the Year. Other players on the championship team included Rachel Berry, Hanna Nechay, Devin Hammond, Sonya Walker, Fiona Reid and Hannah Arrington.
