Seahawks Thrash Bennett, 45-0

9/28/2012 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity football team thrashed Bennett, 45-0, on the road last week to improve to 2-2 on the season.

After two consecutive losses, the Seahawks put it all together last Friday against Bennett, stomping the Clippers in all phases of the game. James Mapp got Decatur on the board early with a four-yard touchdown run. On the Seahawks’ next possession, quarterback Colin Macomber hit Cameron Gaynor on a 44-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead.

Just before the half, Decatur’s P.J. Copes busted off a 63-yard touchdown run to put the Seahawks up, 19-0, at the intermission. In the second half, Decatur added three more touchdowns by Mapp, Chase Sams and Demond Henry to finish off the Clippers by a 45-0 score. While the offense had little trouble running off 45 points against the Clippers, it was the Seahawk defense that really responded last Friday.

After giving up 37 points to Indian River and 39 to Kent Island in two consecutive losses, the Decatur defense turned in a shutout performance against the Clippers last week. Decatur’s record now stands at 2-2, its other win coming over Washington, 41-19, in the season opener.

Decatur plays another Bayside North rival Queen Anne’s tonight on Homecoming at the Berlin school and will try to build on the momentum from last Friday’s big win over Bennett. After tonight’s game, the Seahawks play three straight on the road including visits to Easton, Parkside and North Caroline.
