Berlin All-Stars Fall in State Tourney

8/03/2012 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- The Berlin Junior League All-Stars last week bowed out of the state championship tournament it hosted, falling to Conocheague, 7-6, to end another highly successful season.

The Berlin Little League Junior All-Stars hosted the Maryland State Championship Tournament all last week, but failed to make it the championship round after a couple of games. Berlin, the District 8 champion, beat District 1 champion Conocheague, 18-5, in the second on Sunday, July 22, to advance in the tournament.

Berlin then fell to eventual state champion Chesapeake City, the District 5 champion, 17-8, last Tuesday in a game during which they uncharacteristically made too many errors to overcome. Against Chesapeake City, Berlin’s Brooks Holloway went 2-5 at the plate and drove in two runs. Brandon McKenzie went 1-4 with an RBI, Sean Colgan went 2-4 with an RBI and Wyatt Church also drove in a run.

Despite the loss, Berlin was still alive in the double-elimination tourney. However, Berlin had to face Conocheague again to advance to the championship round, but fell in a tight game, 7-6. Conocheague advance to the championship round, but would have to beat Chesapeake City twice to win the state title. Conocheague beat Chesapeake City last Thursday to force a winner-take-all game, but Chesapeake City ultimately prevailed, 11-0, to win the state championship.
