BERLIN- Worcester Prep’s girls’ varsity soccer team started its 2016 season with a bang this week, routing visiting Gunston, 7-0, in the season opener.

The Mallards led 2-0 after a fairly tight first half, but blew it open early in the second. Madison Bescak scored on a shot from the perimeter just 40 seconds into the second half to extend the lead to 3-0. Just over eight minutes into the second half, the Herons goalkeeper made a great save on a hard shot, but the ball deflected to Melissa Laws, who fired home the rebound to make it 4-0.

Worcester kept relentless pressure on the Gunston net throughout the second half and the goals kept coming. With few exceptions, the Mallard defense was rarely tested as Worcester defended the middle of the field and kept firing the ball into the Herons’ end. The Mallards scored again with 27 minutes remaining in the game to make it 5-0, and added another goal about four minutes later to extend the lead to 6-0. With 19 minutes remaining, Worcester scored its seventh and final goal and pulled away for the 7-0 win. After Wednesday’s win in the home opener, the Mallards hit the road for three straight starting Friday afternoon at Sussex Tech.
