Seahawks Soar At Hurricane Tour Event

BERLIN- Two Stephen Decatur standout golfers put on a show at the Eastern Shore Junior Golf Challenge at Rum Pointe last weekend with one claiming first place and the other finishing a close third.

The Eastern Shore Junior Golf Challenge at Rum Pointe in South Point last weekend was a regional stop in the summer-long Hurricane Junior Golf Tour, which includes dozens of stops all over the county with some of the nation’s top young golfers competing in a cumulative point competition. The event last weekend at Rum Pointe featured two Stephen Decatur golfers, including recent graduate Danny Parker, and rising junior Matt Kristick, competing against some of the top young golfers in the region.

Parker won the two-day event, posting a total score of 151. Parker shot a 78 on day one last Saturday with a birdie on hole number eight sprinkled among five bogies and one double bogie. On Sunday, Parker came out firing and shot a 1-over 73 on the difficult Rum Pointe course. Parker shot 2-under on the front nine and finished with six birdies on the day to secure the Eastern Shore Junior Golf Challenge.

Finishing in second was Joey Voyla of Rockville, Md., who shot a 78 on day one and a 74 on day two to finish one stroke behind Parker for the title. Decatur’s Matt Kristick, who returns to the team as a junior this fall, finished third with an overall score of 156. Kristick was consistent all weekend, shooting a pair of 78s in the two-day event.

Kristick finished second in another Hurricane Junior Tour event, the College Prep Series at the University of Maryland in July, and now has 1,600 total points in the series. Parker earned 1,000 points with his win at the Eastern Shore Junior Golf Challenge last weekend.
