Decatur Track Teams Sweep 1st Bayside Meet

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity track and field teams got the 2015 season off to a good start last week with both the boys and girls finishing first in the opening Bayside Conference meet.

The Decatur boys finished first overall with 183 team points, while Wicomico was second with 117 and Bennett was third with 104. The Decatur girls also finished first with 219 team points, while Bennett was second with 150 points and Arcadia was third with 36 team points.

On the girls’ side, in the 100 high hurdles, Emily Cook finished first, while Emily Kolarik was fourth and Kate Carpenter was sixth. In the girls’ 100, Decatur’s Amari Harmon finished third. Jenna Reimer finished first in the 1,600, while Peyton Dunham was fourth and Meya Chilengi was fifth. Decatur nearly swept the 3,200, with Reimer finishing first, Dunham in third, Alison Alvarado fourth and Emma Leo fifth.

In the 300 hurdles, Cook was third for Decatur, while Bethany Williams was fourth and Carpenter was sixth. Malea Saunders finished fourth for Decatur in the 200. Rachel Savage won the 800, while Amelia Nickell finished fourth. In the 4×800 relay, Decatur finished third and also finished third in the 4×400.

In the field events, Decatur swept the top three spots in the high jump with Hannah Wilson finishing first, Bethany Williams finishing second and Malea Saunders finishing third. The same scenario played out in the triple jump with Williams, Cook and Khalin Wise finishing first, second and third. Lisa Purnell finished first in the discus. Harmon finished second in the long jump, while Williams was third and Jessica Wharton was fifth. In the shot put, it was Takia Long finishing second, with Takira Green in fifth and Lisa Purnell in sixth. The Decatur girls went one-two in the pole vault with Katie Hofman taking first and Hannah Wilson taking second.

On the boys’ side, Sean Velazquez-Alvino finished second in the 110 hurdles. Jakhai Woodard was fifth in the 100 and Jack Reimer was third in the 1,600. Parker Harrington finished first in the 400, while Zach Bernal was fourth. In the 3,200, Reimer, Javier Hernandez and Jake Gaddis finished second, third and fourth.

Ruben Ortega was first in the 300 hurdles, while Velazquez-Alvino was fifth. Woodard came in third in the 200, while Bernal was sixth. Harrington won the 800, while Gary Frick was third. Decatur boys finished second in both the 4×100 and 4×400 relays.

In the field events, Benjamin Short finished second in the high jump. Roland Banks, Short and Jared Massey finished second, third and fourth in the triple jump. Justin Longest finished sixth in the discus. Woodard was first in the long jump, while Tyrese Milbourne and Banks finished fifth and sixth. In the pole vault, Jacob Ciurca was first, Evan Haas was third, Hyun Chun was fourth, Adam Kristick was fifth and Tyler Vansice was sixth. Justin Longest finished third in the shot put, while Ernest Shockley finished sixth.
