Seahawks Sweep Two, Run Streak To 13

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity basketball team stayed on a major roll this week, sweeping two games to run it winning streak to 13 games.

Since a narrow loss to Mardela way back on December 9, the Seahawks have reeled off 13 straight regular season victories after two wins this week. The Decatur girls maintained their edge atop the Bayside South standings over Mardela with the two wins this week and now appear in position to run the table the rest of the way.

One of the major obstacles standing between the Seahawks and their run to a conference title was county rival Pocomoke, who Decatur faced last Thursday. The two teams battled back and forth before the Seahawks began to pull away late. Marina Jones hit a three-pointer to put Decatur ahead, 48-42, with around six minutes remaining.

Jillian Petito then hit a three-pointer of her own to extend the lead to 52-44. Petito pushed the lead to 10 points at 54-44 with a steal and a layup as the clock ran down. Pocomoke would not go down quietly, however, and cut the Decatur lead to 56-50 with under two minutes left in the game.

A Warrior basket with 14 seconds left cut the lead to 57-44, but Dayona Godwin made the front end of a one-and-one to make it a two possession game as time ran down. Godwin led Decatur with 15 points, while Petito scored 14 and Jones added 11.

Back in action on Tuesday with the first of four straight road games, the Seahawks easily cruised past Crisfield, 73-20. Godwin led all scorers with 25 points, while Amya Mumford scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Payton VanKirk pitched in with 11 points in the win over the Crabbers.

Decatur can now see the finish line and a potential Bayside South title, but there is much work still to do. The Seahawks will play the next three on the road including games with Washington, Snow Hill and Bennett, before finishing up with two at home against Kent Island and Parkside.
