BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity wrestling team turned in a strong performance at the 17th Annual Bob Rowe Memorial Classic last weekend at the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center, collecting three individual championships and placing in numerous other weight classes.
The annual Bob Rowe Memorial Classic, a mid-winter wrestling tournament honoring the former Wicomico High coach, was held last weekend at the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center. The tournament featured 17 of the top programs from Maryland, Delaware and Virginia including Decatur, Parkside, Bennett, Mardela and Wicomico from the Bayside Conference.
The Seahawks finished fourth overall in the field of 17 teams with 140 team points. Sussex Central was first with 198.50 points, Parkside was second with 193 points, and Robinson was third with 190.50 points. Decatur also did well in individual weight classes, collecting three championships and placing in six others.
Decatur’s Nate Rosenblatt took first in the 106-pound class, beating Robinson’s Greyson Olimpo and Sussex Central’s Christian Green before beating Jamier Powell of Seaford in the championship bout. At 126, Decatur’s Alford Hardy took first, beating Myron Price of Laurel, Jo’Quon Smith of Woodbridge and Will Witkap of Bethesda-Chevy Chase before topping Nick Bennett of Sussex Tech in the championship.
Decatur’s Luke Bargar took first in the 220-pound class, beating Terry Snowden of Leonardtown, Jeremiah Purnell of Sussex Central and Raheem Ramsey of Wicomico in the title match. Kaelen Patterson finished third in the 145-pound class, beating Shane Fonte of Bennett, losing to Cody Rust of Sussex Tech and then winning two loser’s bracket matches. At 285, Ryan Kail beat Isaiah Abrams of Dover and Edwin Alvarenga of Robert E. Lee, before falling and returning to beat Alvarenga again in the fifth-place match.
Other Decatur wrestlers to place in their respective divisions were Dakota Roderick (132- 6th Place), Alex Schiffer (138- 6th Place), Ethan Eibl (182- 8th Place), and Adam Bargar (195- 7th Place.)
