OCEAN CITY- The Maryland State Surfing Championships were held last Saturday in Ocean City with good conditions and over 50 competitors competing for titles in several categories.

The contest was held at 48th Street in fairly clean conditions with waves in the three to five foot-range for the most part. In the Men’s Open Division, Brad Flora edged out a competitive field to win the Maryland State Championship. Finishing second in the open division was Tyler Clazey, followed by Sam Deeley, Josh Howard and Chris Makibbin. Flora was one of the youngest local surfers to ever win the open championship and is now heading off to contests in California and Hawaii.

In the Women’s Open, Rachel Harrell won the state championship, followed by Kelsey Willison and Jessica Bunting. Makibbin won the state championship in the open longboard division, followed by Chris Shanahan, Bob Fernandez, Josh Howard and Dave Clazey. Makibbin, who was all over the competition, also won the open bodyboard state championship and was honored with the Maryland Iron Man award.
