Seahawks Come Out Strong after Break

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity wrestling team came out of the holiday break smoking hot, thrashing Bayside Conference rival James M. Bennett, 79-0, last Wednesday before settling an old score with Reservoir, 38-31, last Saturday.

The Seahawks finished the first portion of their season with a perfect 6-0 mark before the holiday break including a 3-0 record in the Bayside Conference. Apparently, the holiday lay-off did not cost Decatur any momentum as the Seahawks came out of the break fired up last week.

In their first match last Wednesday, the Seahawks pummeled Bennett into submission, completely shutting out the Clippers by a 79-0 combined team score. The easy win improved Decatur’s conference record to 4-0. Last Saturday, the Seahawks hosted recent nemesis Reservoir and came out of the match with another impressive win.

Since Decatur moved up to Class 3A a few years ago, Reservoir has been a school the Seahawks have had to contend with in all sports, but wrestling has likely provided the most drama in the budding rivalry. Last year, for example, the Seahawks lost to Reservoir, 34-32, in the state Class 3A semifinals and the Gators went on to eventually win the state championship.

Last week, however, the Seahawks earned a small measure of revenge against the Howard County powerhouse, beating the Gators, 38-31, at home on Saturday. The Seahawks were scheduled to face Severna Park on the road yesterday in a match played too late to be included in this edition. Decatur will face its next big test this weekend when it competes in the Spalding Duals today and tomorrow.
