BIS Chess Club “Battle It Out” On The Board

Berlin Intermediate School’s Chess Club has begun its 2010-2011 season. New students are being introduced to the game, while experienced players are battling and honing their skills. Mik Megary, the Chess Club advisor, helps students with various skills and strategies of the game. Above, Emily Malinowsky and Zachary Birkett battle it out on the chess board.

SHES “ACES” Walking Program

Snow Hill Elementary School students and staff participate in a monthly walking program called ACES (All Children Exercise Simultaneously). One Friday every month, the whole school walks for one half hour at the end of the day. Above, kindergarten students Logan Chilly and Vinny Cucina walk together. 

BIS Uncovers Mathematical Magic

In honor of Constitution Day, sixth grade students in Jennifer Garton’s math class at Berlin Intermediate School uncovered the mathematical magic of Benjamin Franklin’s square, by finding the patterns within the numbers and finally connecting the numbers with yarn in order to see the symmetrical geometric design. Showell Elementary Design Hats

Third grade students at Showell Elementary recently made their own hats. They read and followed two sets of directions, compared the directions, and discovered certain text features that helped make the directions easier to read.  The result was these beautiful newspaper hats. 

BIS Students Explore Moods

Mrs. Bunting’s 5th grade enrichment reading group at BIS explored mood by creating watercolors in response to their book, “Jeremy Thatcher, the Dragon Hatcher.”   Each student chose a mood card (angry, silly, zany, etc.) and then had to visually represent it using color, line, and shape.
