BERLIN- Worcester Prep’s girls’ varsity basketball team stayed on a major roll this week, routing Gunston at home on Tuesday to improve to 5-0 on the season.

The Mallards started the season by sweeping two games against tough Delaware opponents during Indian River’s Tip-Off Classic. In the three games since, the Worcester girls have swept three Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference (ESIAC) games including a 71-2 rout of visiting Gunston on Tuesday.

Last Wednesday, the Mallards edged Delmarva Christian, 38-31, in a tight contest. Worcester led 6-5 after one quarter, but Delmarva Christian rallied in the second, outscoring the Mallards in the period to take a 17-12 lead into halftime

In the decisive third quarter, however, Worcester outscored Delmarva Christian 18-7, essentially ending the contest. Both teams played fairly evenly in the fourth as the Mallards closed out the 38-31 win. Lily Baeurle led Worcester with 13 points, while Grace Gardner scored nine, Hailey Merritt and C.C. Lizas each scored six and Hannah Merritt added four.

Back in action last Friday against old familiar rival Saints Peter and Paul, the Mallards routed the Sabres, 53-8. Hailey Merritt led the way with 15 points, while Gardner scored 12 and Hannah Merritt added 10.

On Tuesday, the dominance continued for the Worcester girls with a 71-2 rout of Gunston. Worcester scored early and often and never looked back against the Herons, who did not score until late in the third quarter. Hailey Merritt led Worcester with 22 points, while Hannah Merritt scored 14 and Alannah Curtis added 11. Worcester gets a rematch with Delmarva Christian on the road in a rare Saturday game, followed by a home game with Holly Grove on Monday.
