Worcester Girls Start Season Fast

BERLIN- Worcester Prep’s girls’ varsity basketball team got its season off a fast start last weekend, sweeping two games in the Tip-Off Classic hosted by Indian River to open up with a 2-0 mark.

With an experienced returning roster featuring 10 upperclassmen including seven seniors, expectations are high for Coach Scot Daly’s Worcester Prep team this season. The Mallards opened with a 59-24 win over host Indian River in the Tip-Off Classic to start the season last Friday. Four players scored in double digits and the Mallards got production from all over the roster in the season opener.

Hailey Merritt led the way with 10 points, four rebounds and four steals, while Gracie Gardner scored 10 points and added nine rebounds and three blocks. Lily Baeurle and C.C. Lizas each scored 10 points in the win over Indian River, while Alannah Curtis scored six points and Hannah Merritt added five.

Back in action on day two of the Tip-Off Classic last Saturday, the Mallards routed Delmar, 55-16. Hailey Merritt led the way with 12 points, while Lizas and Hannah Merritt added 10 points each. The Worcester girls get an early season Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference (ESIAC) test on Friday on the road against old rival Saints Peter and Paul before a home game next Tuesday against Gunston.
