Fenwick, State To Host Workshop On Proposed Sidewalks

FENWICK ISLAND – Officials in Fenwick Island are encouraging residents to attend a sidewalk workshop next month.

In a Fenwick Island Town Council meeting last Friday, Councilwoman Vicki Carmean announced representatives from the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) will host a three-hour long workshop to present their plans for a continuous sidewalk system along Coastal Highway.

“One of the things we are looking forward to is taking that first step,” she said, “which will be a workshop for the community.”

Since last year, Carmean – who chairs the town’s Pedestrian Safety Committee – has worked alongside community members and DelDOT representatives to implement a continuous sidewalk path along the town’s main corridor. And in April, at the request of the committee, the town agreed to fund $14,000, or 20 percent, of a study that would determine a financially feasible approach to installing a continuous sidewalk system along Coastal Highway from Delaware Avenue to James Street.

As part of the study, DelDOT would provide consultant services to conduct the study, develop project options and cost estimates, and provide a timeline, renderings, maps and visual displays.

Carmean told the public last week that DelDOT representatives will return to town hall on Nov. 3 from 8-11 a.m. for an open workshop.

“It won’t be a meeting type of situation where you come in, sit down and listen to people,” she said. “There will be display boards set up and different stations for people to go and take a look at what’s being proposed. Supposedly, there will also be experts by each one of those stations who will answer questions.”

Carmean said members of the public are welcome to come to town hall at any time during the allotted three hours, view the plans and ask questions.

“Please plan to come,” she said. “It won’t take all morning and you don’t have to stay here for all three hours. Just come in and get yourself familiar with what is being proposed.”
