Woodland Wins Regional Title in 300

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity track teams turned in solid team and individual performances last week at the state 3A-East region meet including a regional championship in the 400 for sprinter Tahjeem Woodland.

Woodland, who racked up first-place finishes all season in the short distance sprints, was strong again in the regional meet, finishing first in the 400, third in the 200 and ninth in the 100. In the 800, Decatur’s Richard Poist finished 23rd. Javier Hernandez was 21st in the 1,600, while Carlos McClendon was 28th and Brandon Juarez was 29th. Jack Reimer was 18th in the 3,200, while Hernandez finished 21st. Sam Rakowski was 17th in the 110 hurdles and 19th in the 300 hurdles, while Andre Andrews was 22nd in the 300 hurdles.

The Decatur boys were strong in the field events. Jared Massey was fourth in the pole vault, while Poist was eighth. Massey also finished fifth in the triple jump, while Andrews was 14th. Spencer Carbaugh was 10th in the high jump, while Wyatt Davy finished 11th. In the discus, Gavin Payne was ninth, while Patrick Miller finished 14th. Payne was also ninth in the shot put, while Kevin Voyles finished 13th and Miller was 14th. Avonte Purnell was 16th in the long jump, while Montrel Moore finished 22nd.

On the girls’ side, Claire Billings was fifth in the 800. Adrianna Serpe was 11th in the 100 hurdles and 14th in the 300 hurdles. Caela Berrie was seventh in the high jump, while Bridget Buxbaum finished ninth. Bethany Williams was 10th in the triple jump and 16th in the long jump. Khalin Wise was 13th in the triple jump and 17th in the long jump.
