BERLIN- Worcester Prep’s boys’ varsity basketball team outlasted pesky Gunston, 50-46, at home on Monday to improve to 7-4 on the season.

Gunston got out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first before Worcester tied it a 5-5 on baskets by Brendan Miller and Patrick Petrera. The Herons scored on a layup, but Worcester’s Tucker Brown answered with a layup of his own to tie the game at 7-7. Petrera’s long jumper from the corner put Worcester ahead, 9-7, with just over a minute remaining in the first and wrapped up the first quarter with a jump shot to put Worcester ahead 11-9.

At the start of the second quarter, Petrera got a steal and converted the layup to put Worcester ahead, 13-9, but the Herons scored on a jumper to cut the lead to 13-11. The Mallards got a three-pointer from Tate Shockley, but again Gunston answered with a three-pointer to cut the lead to 16-14. Brown scored for Worcester with just over three minutes left in the second to put the Mallards ahead, 21-15. A jumper by Petrera as time expired put Worcester ahead, 24-17, at the break.

Gunston scored to start the third to cut the lead to 24-19, but Worcester’s Colin Miller nailed a three-pointer to extend the lead to 27-19. However, Gunston came right back with baskets on its next two possessions to cut the lead to 27-23. A layup by Brendan Miller followed by a three-pointer from Colin Miller extended Worcester’s lead to 32-23.

Gunston scored on its next two possessions to cut the Worcester lead to 32-27. Colin Miller scored on a runner in the paint to extend the lead to 34-27 with 44 seconds left in the third quarter, but Gunston scored just before the third quarter expired to cut the lead to 34-29.

Gunston scored quickly at the start of the fourth to cut the lead to 34-31. Worcester’s Brown drove hard to the basket to push the lead back to 36-31. Brendan Miller scored on a fast-break and converted the three-point play put Worcester ahead by seven again at 39-32 with just over five minutes remaining.

However, two Gunston baskets cut the lead to 40-36 with just over four minutes left. A pair of layups by Brown extended the Worcester lead to 44-37, but Gunston cut the lead to 44-41 with just over a minute left in the game. Worcester made a handful of key free throws in the waning seconds and pulled out the 50-46 win.
