Seahawks Bow Out Of State Playoffs

BERLIN- The Stephen Decatur boys’ varsity soccer team’s run at a possible state championship ended last week with a 1-0 loss to Chesapeake in the second round of the state 3A-East Section II playoffs, but the loss did little to tarnish what was a remarkable season for the Seahawks.

The Seahawks went unbeaten in the regular season, the only blemish on their otherwise perfect schedule a 1-1 tie with Bayside South rival Bennett back on October 5. Decatur won the Bayside South championship, but fell to Bayside North champ Kent Island in a dramatic double-overtime title game.

Nonetheless, Decatur was awarded with a top seed in the 3A-East Section II region and a first-round bye. In its first state regional match last Tuesday, the Seahawks came from behind to beat fifth-seeded Atholton, in the sectional semifinal to advance. However, last Thursday the Seahawks fell to visiting Chesapeake, 1-0, in the sectional final. Chesapeake was the third seed in the sectional and had upset second-seeded Bennett in the second round before toppling the top-seeded Seahawks.
