BERLIN- It was a familiar scene last Friday as the Worcester Prep girls’ varsity soccer team beat old rival Saints Peter and Paul, 2-1, in the Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference (ESIAC) championship game for the second straight year.

In what was the third game in another epic three-part trilogy, the Mallards trailed the Sabres early, 1-0, and battled back to the 2-1 in the conference championship game. Saints Peter and Paul scored on a penalty kick to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. Worcester’s Sarah Savage scored about 10 seconds into the second half to tie the game at 1-1. With just over 20 minutes left in the game, Melissa Laws scored to put Worcester ahead, 2-1, and they held on the rest of the way.

Saints Peter and Paul beat Worcester Prep in Berlin way back on September 23 to hand the Mallards their only loss on the season. The Worcester girls avenged that loss with a 3-0 win over Saints Peter and Paul on the road on October 11. The season split set up the familiar meeting in the conference championship game for the two schools. This year, it was Worcester coming from behind with a 2-1 win to claim the title. Last year, the Worcester girls beat Saints Peter and Paul, 4-0, in the conference championship game to complete a perfect season. In 2014, it was the Sabres taking the title with a dramatic 1-0 win in double-overtime in the conference championship game.
