The Ocean City Mayor and Council implemented the evacuation of Ocean City for the second time in two years when Hurricane Sandy roared up the Atlantic coast on Oct. 29, 2012 (Hurricane Irene was the other on Aug. 25, 2011). Fortunately, for Ocean City the storm passed several miles offshore but it gave the town a scare.

The Ocean City Fishing Pier lost over 100 feet while north of 27th Street the dune line was partially destroyed and had to be rebuilt. The seawall saved the Boardwalk but much of the beach was badly eroded and covered with debris. Damage occurred to the docks and piers along the bayside but no lives were lost nor serious injuries reported.

Hurricane Sandy came ashore about 100 miles north of Ocean City and devastated New Jersey, New York City and southern New England.

When the final figures were in, “Superstorm Sandy,” as it became known, was the second most costly storm behind Hurricane Katrina in 2005 in U.S. History with over $70 billion in property losses.
