Decatur Golfers Solid In State Semifinals

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity golf team turned in a strong performance at the state semifinal match at the University of Maryland College Park course on Monday, finishing fifth among the 12 schools in the tournament, but falling just one stroke short of qualifying as a team for the state championship match.

The Seahawks finished with a score of 333, which was just one stroke short of qualifying as a team for the state championship match. However, three Decatur golfers made the cut to qualify as individual players in the state championship match. On Monday at the College Park course, Matt Kinsey led the Seahawks with a 77, while Matt Kristick shot 82, Tanner Leonard shot 84 and Hayden Snelsire shot 90. Decatur’s Emily Malinowski competed as an individual during Monday’s event and finished with a 99.

With the 3A-4A tournament in the books, the state’s 1A-2A teams held their tournament on Tuesday. After that tournament was completed, a target cut score was announced for the state championship tournament was determined and Kinsey, Kristick and Leonard all advanced to compete for Decatur as individuals.
