OCEAN CITY — A local youth organization made up of children who live and visit Sunset Island hosted an auction last week for the autism charity Surfers Healing. The children raised over $2,000 for the surf charity, which hosts an event each year in Ocean City.

Paige Clark, 13, of Annapolis, Brady Esham, 13 of Berlin, and Lauren Stoll, 10, of Los Angeles, chaired the event, which took place on Wednesday July 6 on the bay at Sunset Island at 67th Street. Other children involved in organizing the event were Anna Clark, 9 of Annapolis; Ben Stoll, 8 of Los Angeles; and Rebecca Stoll, 7, of Los Angeles).

The children solicited donations from neighbors and local businesses and invited the Sunset Island community to come bid silently on the items. In addition, the children auctioned off several live items including a two-night stay in Williamsburg, Va. and a three-hour boat ride on the 36-foot Yellowfin Jackal. Other auction items came from The Landing Restaurant, Fountain Treats, Atlantic Smith Cropper & Deeley, Summerhouse Trading Company, Longboard Cafe, Alexis Jade, OC Nails, Dolle’s, Old Pro Golf, Atlantic Gold and Touch of Italy.

The Sunset Island Junior Social Committee is a group of children who spend their summers in Ocean City. The committee hosts events like lemonade stands and craft fairs each summer to raise money for various charities. Inspired by their friend and committee chair Brady Esham’s personal experience at Surfers Healing, this year the children selected the group to benefit from their fundraising efforts.

“This is a record for our group. We want to thank everyone at Sunset Island and all the businesses that donated for their support,” said Paige Clark, Committee Co-Chair.

“My cousin, Brady Esham, benefited from Surfers Healing and he was a great auctioneer for our event,” said Co-Chair Lauren Stoll.

“We raised over $2,000 for Surfers Healing and we had a great time doing it,” said Esham.

Surfers Healing is an autism charity that runs surf camps for children across the United States and the world. Each year, Surfers Healing hosts a surf camp in Ocean City. This year’s event takes place on Aug. 17 on the beach at 37th Street.
