Hospice patients most often choose to remain at home. However, a growing number find that at the end of life they are unable to manage alone or need more support than a frail spouse can provide. Suddenly, home is no longer the safest place to receive hospice care. A study commissioned by the Coastal Hospice board confirms an unmet need for an additional hospice residence on the Lower Shore of Maryland.
Coastal Hospice at the Ocean will be located at The Point in Ocean Pines and will care for at least 100 patients per year. In addition, the facility will host four community outreach programs: Palliative Care, or treatment for physical, emotional, and spiritual pain; Bereavement Support, or group and individual counseling; Community Education, or healthy living and caregiver support; and Volunteer Services. The cost to build the facility – from permits and land purchase through to medical equipment, furnishings, and landscaping – is $5 million.
“Absolutely everyone is touched by hospice at some point in their lives, whether they are a patient or the family member of a patient,” said Linda Moran, president of CAR. “Just as real estate professionals help their clients feel at home, Coastal Hospice at the Ocean will do the same for its patients. We are proud to support this campaign.”
