SELBYVILLE – Whether you’re looking for local craft beer or a new brand of bourbon, the chances are you can find it at Big Liquor.

Big Liquor, the store located next to Food Lion in Selbyville, is just that. The nearly 7,000-square-foot store is chock full of beers, wine and liquors.

“With the size of the store, I try to carry a little bit of everything,” owner Vishal (Vic) Vyas said.

Vyas and his father spent close to four years getting the store — which used to be a Rite Aid — ready and going through the necessary permitting procedures with the state. Vyas said the process went slow because this was the family’s first liquor store.

“My father’s been in retail for years,” Vyas said. “Convenience stores and gas stations. This was the next thing to do in retail.”

Because the space they secured for Big Liquor was immense, Vyas and his father opted to stock the store with just about everything they could. Vyas wants shoppers to know they no longer have to travel to Sussex County’s beach towns to get the low prices that come with big buying power.

“When you order a lot, you have better prices,” Vyas said.

Since opening less than a year ago, he said the store had developed a strong client base made up of both locals and tourists. Many customers come from Worcester County as well.

“We have a good local crowd to rely upon,” Vyas said.

He’s quick to point out that the store offers an extensive selection of adult beverages, with particular attention to its bourbon and scotch selections.

“They’re becoming really popular,” he said.

The store also features wines ranging in price from $4.99 to $60 as well as moonshine and gift sets of popular liquors. Big Liquor also has an array of craft beers for sale. Local breweries such as Tall Tales and Burley Oak are well represented, as are other popular brands from throughout the country. Big Liquor offers a “build your own six-pack” section that allows customers to mix and match the beers.

“Rather than buy a six-pack they don’t like they can buy a bottle at a time,” Vyas said.

While the inventory at Big Liquor is huge, if a customer is looking for something the store doesn’t have Vyas will try and can get it.

“We’re always trying to help the customers out as much as we can,” he said.

Big Liquor is open Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday-Saturday 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m.
