BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity baseball team swept two games this week to remain unbeaten at 4-0 and settle into the top spot in the Bayside South standings.
After starting the season 2-0 with wins over Queen Anne’s and South River, the Seahawks faced their first real conference test last Thursday at home against old Bayside South rival Bennett. The game began as a tight pitching duel as the Seahawks took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the third. However, a three-run homer by Decatur’s Zach Adams in the third extended the lead to 4-0 and briefly blew the game open.
Bennett continued to battle and the Seahawks would need every one of those four runs and then some. The Clippers chipped away at the lead throughout the middle innings, but the Seahawks held on for the 8-6 victory.
Back in action at home on Monday, the Seahawks took on Wicomico and came away with another hard-fought 6-4 win to improve to remain unbeaten. Decatur has another tough one at Parkside this afternoon and will return home on Monday for a 4 p.m. game with Mardela. Also looming next week is a rematch with Wicomico on the road on Wednesday.
