POCOMOKE- Pocomoke’s boys’ varsity basketball team last Saturday completed a run through the state 1A-East region playoffs with a decisive 80-62 win over Kent County to advance to the Final Four in College Park this weekend.
The Warriors, whose only regular season loss came against county rival Decatur, won the coin toss over the Seahawks to secure the Bayside South title. Pocomoke then cruised to the Bayside Conference championship, beating Cambridge-South Dorchester, 61-47. The Warriors opened the 1A-East region playoffs as the number-one seed in Section II and cruised past some familiar foes.
Pocomoke beat Crisfield, 71-43, in its playoff opener, then beat Washington, 80-58, in the sectional final to reach the region championship game. The Warriors took on Kent County last Saturday at home in the regional championship game, and for a while it was a tight contest.
The Trojans actually led, 13-10, in the first before the Warriors got it cranked up. Pocomoke went on a decisive 17-4 run in the second quarter to essentially end any threat from Kent County. With the win, the Warriors won the 1A-East region championship game and advanced to the state’s Final Four. Pocomoke is scheduled to play 1A-West champion Clear Spring in the state semifinals on Friday night and would play in the state championship game on Saturday if they advance.
Meanwhile, the Pocomoke girls also won its 1A-East region championship on their home floor last Saturday to advance to the Final Four. The Warriors breezed through the 1A-East region Section II playoffs, beating Snow Hill and Mardela in impressive fashion to advance to the region championship game.
Against Cambridge-South Dorchester in the region title game last Saturday at home, the Warriors left nothing to chance and blew out the Vikings, 62-32. The competition will become much stiffer on Friday night when Pocomoke travels to Towson University’s SECU Arena for a Final Four matchup with 1A-West champion Southern. The Warriors face Southern at 9 p.m. on Friday with a chance to advance to the state championship game on Saturday.
