Kaminiski, McKahan Win Regional Titles

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity wrestling team turned in a solid performance in the state 4A-3A South tournament last weekend, collecting two regional titles and advancing four wrestlers to the state championships this weekend.

The Seahawks sent 10 wrestlers to the state 4A-3A region tournament last weekend and four placed, including a regional championship at 106 for Robert Kaminski and a regional title at 132 for Andy McKahan. Decatur finished seventh overall among the 19 schools represented and advances four to the state championship meet this week.

At 106, Kaminski swept three matches to win the regional championship. Kaminski beat a familiar foe in Bennett’s Pat Hughes in his opener, then beat Gage Beaven of Chopticon in the second round to reach the finals. In the championship bout, Kaminski beat Kidus Gebrgiorgis to win the regional championship at 106. With the win, Kaminski advances to the state championship meet this weekend where he will face Phil Bramucci of Dulaney in the opening round.

At 132, McKahan also won three straight to capture the regional title. McKahan beat Kevin Rojas of High Point in the opener, then beat Isaiah Edmond of North Point in the second round. In the championship bout, McKahan beat Ricky Bryant of Eleanor Roosevelt to win the regional title. McKahan advanced to the state meet where he will face Berkley Todd of Digital Harbor in his opener.

At 113, Decatur’s Josh Lawson finished third overall and advanced to the state championship meet. Lawson beat David Evans of Northwestern in his opener, then fell to Parker McDowell of Leonardtown in the second round. Lawson responded by beating North Point’s Caleb Blancafor and Oxon Hill’s Marlon Watts to claim third place overall. Lawson will face Chris Kirchner of North County in his opener at the state meet.

At 120, Decatur’s Jeremy Danner finished fourth overall and advanced to states. Danner beat Mark Martinez of Parkdale, but lost to Hanry Narby of Oxon Hill in the second round. Danner beat Austin McCollum of North Point and Barrak Gay of Huntingtown, but fell to Andrew Thomas of Eleanor Roosevelt to finish fourth in the bracket. Danner will face Antonio Lopez of Quince Orchard in the opening round at states.

Several other Decatur wrestlers competed in the regional meet with varying results including Adam McInerney at 145, Lukas Layton at 152, Tyler Vansice at 160, Caleb Bourne at 182, Dryden Brous at 195 and Jian Joobeen at 220.
