WCDC Friends Group Honored For Volunteer Service Hours

SNOW HILL — The County Commissioners and Volunteer Services Manager Kelly Brinkley recently recognized the Friends of the Worcester County Developmental Center (WCDC) in Newark with a county proclamation for the investment this group is making in improving the quality of life here in Worcester County.

The commissioners also presented the Friends group with the prestigious President’s Gold Volunteer Service Award for investing over 2,236 volunteer hours in 2014.

Thirty-one WCDC Friends raise needed funds and host diverse WCDC programs. They engage clients with activities, like birthday celebrations, annual family picnic, and field trips to area attractions, including. They organize a family support group, and host annual fundraising events, including an annual yard sale. Friends also purchased equipment and supplies for the WCDC

“Volunteers like the Friends of the WCDC are the lifeblood of our communities, and the services they provide are a critical component in the quality of life that sets Worcester County apart from other communities,” Commission President Jim Bunting said. “Their contributions improve the lives of those around us.”

Friends of the WCDC represent a small sampling of the many outstanding volunteers making a positive impact. Volunteers serve in numerous capacities throughout Worcester County and fill needs that would otherwise go unmet.

The presentation ceremony took place April 20 after National Volunteer Week, which took place April 12-18.
