BERLIN- For the second time in less than a week, Stephen Decatur’s boys’ varsity lacrosse team stumbled against familiar rival Kent Island, 12-6, in the state 3A-East region tournament on Monday to close out the season.
The Seahawks entered the 3A-East tournament as the number-two seed and dispatched Bayside South rival Bennett, 14-6, last Friday. The opening round win advanced Decatur to the region semifinals, but standing in their way again was Kent Island. The Buccaneers beat the Seahawks, 13-5, last week in the Bayside championship, and when the state regional playoff brackets were released last week, it was inevitable the two teams were on a collision course to meet again.
Decatur lost to Kent Island, 10-9-, in the regular season in a tense game at home in the first week that could have gone either way. With the loss in the Bayside championship and now the state regional playoffs, the Seahawks lost to Kent Island three times this season, accounting for three of the team’s four losses. The Seahawks’ only other loss in an otherwise outstanding 11-4 season came at the hands of Cape Henlopen.
