Worcester Girls Sweep Two, Stay On Roll

BERLIN- Worcester Prep’s girls’ varsity lacrosse team swept two games this week, beating Tower Hill and Bennett, to improve to 7-1 on the season.

In the 17-12 win over Tower Hill, the Mallards led 11-6 at the half and held on for the 17-12 win despite Tower Hill playing them even in the second half. Leigh Lingo and Sophie Brennan led the Mallards with four goals each, while Molly Soule added three. Karlie Southcomb, Cecily Sass and Caroline Lindsay scored two goals each, while Grace Tunis dished out three assists.

Back in action again on Tuesday, the Mallards beat Bennett, 16-7, after jumping out to a big early lead. Worcester already led 6-1 with just under 12 minutes left in the first half when Soule scored at the 10:32 mark to make it 7-1. Bennett cut the lead to 7-2 just about a minute later with a goal at 9:39. Worcester won the ensuing draw and Brennan converted a quick goal to extend the lead to 8-2 just 40 seconds later.

nice move on the crease. Bennett stopped the run with a goal with just over five minutes remaining to cut the lead to 5-3. With just over two minutes left in the half, Southcomb hit Melissa Laws with a nice feed to extend the Mallard lead to 11-3 and Soule added another late goal as Worcester took a 12-3 lead into halftime.

Early in the second, Southcomb scored on a penalty shot to extend the lead to 13-3. Lingo then added another penalty goal at the 17:35 mark to push it to 14-3. Bennett scored with just over 11 minutes left in the game to cut the lead to 14-4. With the big lead and time running down, Worcester was largely content to patiently work the ball around the perimeter and burn some of the clock. With 8:20 remaining, Olivia Bescak scored on a nice assist by Marissa Grosso to extend the lead to 15-4. Bennett scored on a penalty shot to cut the lead to 15-5 with about five minutes remaining.

Lindsay made a nice move in the middle to score and extend the Mallard lead to 16-5 with just over three minutes left for Worcester’s final goal. Bennett scored twice late to finish out the game at 16-7.
