BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity wrestling team turned in a solid performance at the Battle at the Beach tournament at Indian River last weekend and is now prepping for the annual Iron Horse Duals.
The Seahawks finished 15th overall among the 22 teams in the Battle at the Beach tournament hosted by Indian River High School last Friday and Saturday. Two Decatur wrestlers placed in their respective divisions against some of the top competitors from around the mid-Atlantic region in the two-day event.
At 126, Decatur’s Andy McKahan swept three straight matches to reach the finals before falling in the championship bout. McKahan beat Cody Stevenson of Caesar Rodney in his opener, then beat Steve Tronetta of Haverford and Alex Creasey of Milford to reach the championship in the 126 division. McKahan then fell to Kyle Medrow of West Chester Henderson in the title match.
At 120, Decatur’s Drew Baker finished sixth. Baker beat Hunter LaMarche of Delcastle in his opener, then beat Ray Martin of West Chester Henderson in his second bout to advance. Baker then lost to JuWan Massey of Woodbridge, who went on to win the 120 division. Baker lost to Max Norquest of Cape Henlopen, but came back to beat Martin for the second time to place sixth in the division.
The Seahawks will hope to build on the momentum this weekend at the 15th Annual Iron Horse Duals at C. Milton Wright against some of the top high school wrestling programs in the state. The tournament gets underway today with early round matches and concludes with a full day of wrestling including championship matches on Saturday.
The Seahawks will compete initially in Group B, which also includes St. John’s, Hereford, host C. Milton Wright, Spring Grove, Bishop McNamara and Franklin. Each team will wrestle all of the other teams in its group and the top two teams will advance to face the top two finishers in the opposite group. Group A includes River Hill, Archbishop Spalding, John Carroll, St. Mary’s Ryken, Liberty, Bel Air and Joppatowne.
