Decatur Girls Start Season With 2-0 Mark

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity soccer team got its 2014 campaign off to a fast start with a pair of victories over Bayside North foes to start the year with a 2-0 record.

In the season opener last Friday at home, the Seahawks edged visiting Easton, 1-0, in a tight, well-played game. Both teams had early opportunities to score, but the game remained tied, 0-0, at the half. About 12 minutes into the second half, Decatur’s Payton VanKirk launched a nice cross from the right corner into traffic in front of the Easton net. Jillian Petito then fired a perfect shot into the upper left corner to stake the Seahawks to a 1-0 lead.

That was all of the offense the Seahawks would need. Decatur’s stingy defense, led by senior captains Ally Beck and Jenna Leitgeb, shut out Easton the rest of the way and the Seahawks held on for the 1-0 win.

On Tuesday, Decatur beat Queen Anne’s, 4-1, in a damp, steady drizzle on the road to improve to 2-0 on the season. Petito led the Seahawks with three goals and Lexi VanKirk added the fourth. Lexi Gauspohl and Mallory Vara each recorded assists. The Seahawks played Kent Island last night in a game played too late to be included in this edition. Decatur returns home next Tuesday for a game against Mardela.
