Child Recovering After Being Struck By Vehicle

BERLIN — A local 2-year-old boy is reportedly recovering from injuries sustained last weekend after the child wandered onto Sinepuxent Rd. near Berlin and was struck by a vehicle.

The Worcester County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the accident that occurred around 7:20 p.m. last Sunday. According to police reports, the child was playing in his yard nearby and wandered onto Sinepuxent Rd. east of Seahawk Rd. and was struck by a vehicle.

The driver stopped and ultimately drove the injured child and his mother to the hospital for treatment. The child was subsequently transported to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore for further treatment. According to reports, the child suffered some broken bones and a concussion, but by Monday was alert and talking and on the mend.

The driver, identified as Thomas Purnell, Jr., 26, of Berlin, was cited for driving on an expired license and for driving without insurance. The Worcester County Sheriff’s Office reported alcohol is not a factor in the accident.
