BERLIN- The Stephen Decatur varsity baseball team responded to its first loss of the season last week, a 5-0 shutout to Parkside, with an 11-4 rout of James M. Bennett on Friday.
The Seahawks improved to 3-1 with the win over Bennett, which came just three days after their first loss of the season to the Rams last week. For a while, it appeared Decatur was heading toward its second defeat after surrendering four runs in the bottom of the third, but ace Grant Donohue settled down and the Seahawk bats came alive in a big way down the stretch.
After falling behind 4-0 in the bottom of the third, the Seahawks scored four times in the top of the fourth, led by back-to-back-to-back doubles by Zach Adams, Justin Meekins and Jake Hickman. Meekins went 4-4 on the afternoon. Decatur added six more in the top of the fifth, capped off by a two-run double by Nick Bennett. Donohue, who struggled a little early, was dominant down the stretch and held the Clippers at just the four runs given up early. Decatur added another run in the sixth to close out the 11-4 win.
