Winter Weather Wreaks Havoc on Prep Schedule

BERLIN- The latest and likely last blast of winter weather this week wreaked havoc with the spring prep sports schedule struggling to get up and running this year.

With the calendar nearly ready to flip over to April, most of the area’s spring high school sports teams have had few opportunities to hit the fields, courts and tracks thus far. With almost weekly significant snow falls, the spring sports teams at Decatur, Worcester Prep and all over Delmarva have had few real contests thus far and most have had few outdoor practices. It continues a pattern that began in January and February with winter sports games, meets and matches canceled or postponed by repeated winter weather events.

For example, the Worcester Prep boys’ varsity lacrosse season opener with Gunston scheduled for Wednesday was wiped out by the snow storm overnight Tuesday and into Wednesday morning. The Mallards were scheduled to play Salisbury School on the road yesterday, but that game was likely in jeopardy if the field was still covered by snow or deemed too wet and muddy to play. The Mallards last live competition came back on March 12 in a scrimmage with Parkside.

Similarly, the Worcester Prep girls’ varsity lacrosse game scheduled for Wednesday against Salisbury School was postponed. The Mallard girls’ team last played in a scrimmage against Parkside back on March 11. Worcester Prep’s boys’ and girls’ tennis matches with Gunston scheduled for Wednesday were also postponed.

Over at Decatur, the boys’ varsity lacrosse team has had a few scrimmages, but its regular season opener against Bennett set for Wednesday was postponed because of the snow. Instead, the Decatur boys will open the season on the road against Wicomico. The Decatur girls did manage to get their season opener in on Monday against Kent Island, but Wednesday’s game against Bennett was postponed. The Decatur girls will host Bennett this afternoon.

The Decatur tennis teams were scheduled to play Washington at home yesterday in matches played too late to be included in this edition. The Decatur boys’ and girls’ outdoor track teams were scheduled to have a meet at North Caroline on Wednesday, but that too was postponed. The track teams will face Snow Hill next Wednesday.
