Worcester Girls Fall To Sabres In ESIAC Final

BERLIN- Worcester Prep’s girls’ varsity basketball team lost to old rival Saints Peter and Paul, 47-35, in the Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference (ESIAC) tournament championship game last week.

The Mallards and the Sabres played a sloppy first quarter with 18 combined turnovers that ended in an 8-8 tie. Saints Peter and Paul found a groove in the second quarter and outscored Worcester 13-3 during the period to take a 21-11 lead into intermission. The Sabres continued to build on their lead against the struggling Mallards through the third quarter before the Worcester girls began to mount a big comeback.

The Mallards went on a 12-2 run in the fourth to cut the Sabres’ lead to just four at 32-28 with a little over six minutes left in the game. However, Saints Peter and Paul withstood the challenge and went on a 7-0 run of their own to steadily pull away from Worcester down the stretch.

For Saints Peter and Paul, the victory in the ESIAC championship game avenged a 34-30 loss to Worcester early in the season. Kristen Shriver led Worcester with 15 points, while Sophie Brennan added 10. The loss did little to tarnish what was another successful season for the Mallards, who finished with a 15-3 record including a 12-3 mark in the conference.
