Decatur Girls Earn Top Seed In 3A-South

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity basketball team wrapped up its regular season with a 65-28 win over Parkside last week and now sets its sights on a possible regional and state championship as the top seed in the 3A-South sectional.

The Seahawks enjoyed a remarkable regular season during which they went 18-2. They closed out the regular season with a win over Parkside last Thursday and finished on a 10-game winning streak. During the streak, the Seahawks beat undefeated Mardela back on February 3 to narrow the gap in the Bayside South standings, but Mardela won out down the stretch and clinched the conference championship.

Nonetheless, the Decatur girls earned the number-one seed in the state Class 3A-South Section I when the brackets were released this week, earning them a first-round bye, at least one home game and a clear path to a regional championship. The Seahawks have a first-round bye and will face the winner of the opening round game between Northeast (4) and Bennett (5). Number-three Huntingtown will face second-seeded Northern on the other side of the bracket.

The Decatur boys also earned a number-one seed in their 3A-South Section I bracket and also received a first-round bye. The Seahawks will face the winner of the first round game between Northern (4) and Northeast (5). Bayside South rival Bennett is the second seed and the two familiar foes could meet again in the sectional final. Bennett faces third-seeded Huntingtown in the second round.

In the boys’ 2A-East Section I, Easton is the top seed and has a first-round bye. They will face the winner of the first-round game between North Caroline (4) and Kent Island (5). Wicomico is the number-two seed and will face the winner of the game between Parkside (3) and Queen Anne’s (6).

In the girls’ 2A-East Section I, Queen Anne’s is the top seed and will face either Wicomico (4) or North Caroline (5) in the second round. Kent Island is the two-seed and will face either Easton (3) or Parkside (6).

In the boys’ 1A-East region, Crisfield is the top seed and will face the winner of the game between North Dorchester (4) and Snow Hill (5). Washington (3) will face Cambridge-South Dorchester (6), while Pocomoke (2) will face Mardela (7).

Finally, in the girls’ 1A-East, Mardela is the top seed and will face either Washington (4) or Crisfield (5). North Dorchester (3) will face Snow Hill (6), and Pocomoke (2) will face Cambridge-South Dorchester (7).
