Mallards Sweep First Three after Break

BERLIN- Worcester Prep’s girls’ varsity basketball started the second half of the season with three straight wins including a nail biter against old rival Saints Peter and Paul last Friday to avenge a loss right before the holiday break.

The Mallards entered the holiday break with a solid 4-2 record, but have now won three straight to improve to 7-2. Worcester easily handled Chincoteague, 40-24, last Wednesday in their first game since the break. On Friday, they edged Saints Peter and Paul, 34-30, in a tight contest ultimately decided by free throws. The win avenged the loss to the Sabres, 29-21, back on December 19.

Worcester trailed, 23-21, late in the third and was able to win the contest despite scoring just one more field goal in the fourth quarter. With 2:52 remaining, Meg Lingo nailed a pair of free throws to give the Mallards the lead, 30-28. After a Sabres basket cut the tied the game again at 30-30, Worcester’s Grace Tunis converted a pair of foul shots to put the Mallards ahead for good at 32-30 with just 30 seconds left. Worcester’s Kristen Shriver nailed two more free throws with four seconds left to seal the 34-30 win. Sophie Brennan led Worcester with 12 points.

Worcester continued its second half winning streak with an easy 60-20 win over Holly Grove on Monday. Shriver led the Mallards with 12 points, while Lilly DiNardo scored 11 and Brennan had 10. The Worcester girls played Delmarva Christian on the road last night in a game played too late to be included in this edition. The Mallards won’t play again until a February 5 contest at home against Salisbury Christian.
