Decatur Wrestlers Cruise Past Easton, 68-6

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity wrestling team cruised past Easton, 68-6, last week to improve to 4-0 and set up what should be a dramatic rematch with rival Kent Island at home next week after the two teams wrestled to a tie last year.

After the 68-6 win over Easton last week, Decatur’s record stood at 4-0 and the Seahawks were ranked 19th among the 200 public and private schools with wrestling programs in the state. Decatur wrestled in a tri-meet with Cambridge-South Dorchester and Mardela yesterday in a match played too late to be included in this edition, and will face Kent County at home this evening before the highly anticipated rematch with Kent Island next Wednesday.

Against Easton, Robert Kaminski won by pin at 106, Michael Tropkoff won by decision at 113, Andy McKahan won by pin at 120 and T.J. Scafone won by technical fall at 126. Joe Rodriguez won by technical fall at 132, Nate Rosenblatt won by pin at 138, Nick Bennett won by pin at 152 and Brett Kim won by major decision at 160. Jared King won by pine at 170, Andrew Borradaile won by decision at 182, Brandon Wooten won by forfeit at 195, Caleb Massey won by pin at 220 and Ethan Eibl won by pin at 285.

The Seahawks will host Kent Island next Wednesday in what should be a dramatic rematch of last year’s knock down drag out match that ended in a 33-33 tie before Decatur was declared the winner after officials sorted out several steps in the tiebreaker protocols. The Seahawks got out to a 33-12 lead and hung on as the Buccaneers battled back and tied the match in the final bout.

There was some confusion at the end about who was the winner as officials sorted through the tiebreaking procedures before finally declaring Decatur the winner. Both teams are expected to be undefeated heading into next Wednesday’s rematch at Decatur starting at 5 p.m.
