Good News Keeps Coming for Decatur Wrestlers

BERLIN- Good news continues to abound for Decatur’s varsity wrestling program, which turned in a strong performance at the Iron Horse Duals last weekend, has two wrestlers on the cusp of their milestone 100th wins and has soared into the top echelon in the rankings of high school programs across the state.

The Seahawks competed in the whirlwind Iron Horse Duals at C. Milton Wright in Harford County last week along with some of the top high school programs in the state. The tournament was scheduled for two days last Friday and Saturday, but because weather canceled school in Harford County on Friday, the event was condensed into a single day on Saturday.

Decatur had five matches in a single day at the Iron Horse Duals on Saturday and came away with a 2-3 record, although the final count is not entirely indicative of how the Seahawks performed. Decatur defeated Western Tech, 63-15 and North Carroll, 46-31, but then ran into some stiff competition against highly ranked teams and performed admirably.

The Seahawks lost to number-seven Huntingtown, 37-22, then narrowly lost another match to eighth-ranked Georgetown Prep, 39-30. In it last match of the tournament, Decatur fell to 17th-ranked Hereford, 38-30. The Seahawks are now ranked 18th out of the 200 public and private schools in the state.

The accolades are expected to continue for the Decatur program with two wrestlers on the cusp of reaching significant personal milestones. Both Nick Bennett and Andrew Borradaile will enter next Wednesday’s tri-meet with Cambridge-South Dorchester and Mardela with 99 wins in their high school careers and each is expected to pick up their milestone 100th wins. Just last week, Borradaile, a senior standout football player, wrestler and baseball player, committed to the Naval Academy Prep School for next year.
