OCEAN CITY – To accommodate its growing bar crowd, J/R’s House of Ribs on 131st Street has expanded its sports bar and menu offerings, including the addition of steamed blue crabs.
“I came back to J/R’s from a leave of absence of over four years. This restaurant in my opinion needed some work … as big as the restaurant is, there were other things that should be added,” J/R’s House of Ribs owner Jack Hubberman said.
J/R’s large dining room can seat about 350 people plus the restaurant has ample parking in the front, side and back of the building but the sports bar portion was becoming overcrowded, leading Hubberman to weigh expansion.
“I believe now with the expansion of the sports bar we have one of the finest and fair priced food menus, including happy hour in the sports bar all day, and enough room to accommodate our customers,” Hubberman said.
The southernmost brick wall in the bar area was knocked out and an additional nine feet was added with new tables and chairs, as well as rail seating along the south wall. Prior to the expansion, the sports bar could seat close to 50 people but with the expansion J/R’s now can seat at least 100 people in the sports bar area.
The new southern wall now has five large windows to brighten the space with fresh paint to give a much more refreshing look. Coming in the near future the dining room will be separated from the sports bar by large glass doors that will act as a noise buffer to allow diners to enjoy their meals in a quieter atmosphere.
The restaurant has also grown to include 15 televisions, ranging in size from 46 to 70 inches with DirectTV and the full NFL package to show all football games.
To match the expansion, J/R’s is also adding to their sports bar menu, such as raw oysters, grilled oysters, clams casino, cream of crab soup and more.
“We are in our kitchen now preparing and testing new items,” Hubberman said of new sports bar menu items.
The second change Hubberman decided on was to add steamed blue crabs to the menu. The restaurant now has a complete steamed crab department, including a brand new large stainless steel refrigeration box for the crabs that will be served in the sports bar and the restaurant’s private room
“There will be plenty of room for the people who want crabs and plenty of room for those who want to sit down and have a nice dinner,” Hubberman said.
Hubberman explained when he came back from his leave of absence he had noticed a change where chains and restaurants that specialize in specific food items had grown to offer a wide variety on their menu in order to survive.
“I put in crabs because everybody now sells ribs except for my barber, and the reason he isn’t selling ribs is because he doesn’t want to lose me as a customer,” Hubberman said. “You can’t name a chain or a restaurant that doesn’t have ribs on their menu but none of them can compare with ours. Others compete but no one compares, and that is the fact.”
J/R’s is currently offering crabs from Louisiana in all sizes — small, large, extra-large and jumbos that are offered by the half dozen or dozen.
“We have been in the rib business for 34 years. We have the finest ribs at the beach, they are absolutely delicious, and one of the best crab cakes you will ever eat. All of the food that we serve, including seafood and steaks, we try to be the best,” Hubberman said. “This all can be found only at J/R’s 131st location because of our size but come and enjoy our full menu and ribs at both locations, 62nd and 131st streets.”
J/R’s takes pride in their reasonably priced items on their happy hour, sports bar and full dinner menu, including a children’s menu.
Hubberman also added the catering and take-out business on 131st Street is being stocked for all your holiday needs. Additionally, he said J/R’s will be offering a Thanksgiving dinner.
