BERLIN- With a little assistance from Mother Nature, Decatur’s boys’ varsity lacrosse team this week earned a share of the Bayside Conference championship after rain washed out the title game rematch with Kent Island on Tuesday.
Last year, the Seahawks edged the Buccaneers, 10-9, in a dramatic Bayside Conference championship game and the two teams were on a collision course for a repeat performance on Tuesday before conference officials decided to postpone the contest due to continued bad weather. As a result, Decatur, which won the Bayside South title, and Kent Island, which won the Bayside North title, were named co-conference champions on Tuesday afternoon after the title game was rained out and not rescheduled.
The Seahawks finished the regular season with an 11-3 record and won its last seven games down the stretch to clinch the Bayside South title. Decatur closed out the regular season with a 15-10 win over Bennett last Wednesday and a 14-8 win over old rival Parkside in the season finale at home last Friday.
Despite the cancellation of Tuesday’s conference championship game against Kent Island, the Seahawks will likely have an opportunity to face the Buccaneers again in the state playoffs. Kent Island went 11-1 on the season and beat Decatur, 10-7, way back on March 26. When the state Class 3A-2A East region brackets were released on Monday, Decatur had earned a number-two seed and will face Easton at home in its first postseason game this afternoon. The Seahawks beat Easton, 13-11, on April 19.
Should the Seahawks get past the Warriors, they would likely face Kent Island in the eastern sectional quarterfinals. Kent Island is the top seed in the east sectional and will face the winner of the first-round game between Bennett and Queen Anne’s.
