BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity baseball team dropped a pair of close games to Bayside South rivals this week to close out the regular season, but earned a number-three seed in the state Class 3A-East region tournament when the brackets were released on Wednesday.
The Seahawks fell to Parkside, 3-1, last Friday in a tight, well-played game by both teams. Decatur’s Grant Donohue was matching the Rams’ starter scoreless inning after scoreless inning until the Seahawks broke through in the fourth. A sacrifice fly by Jacob Hickman scored Chase Coursey to break up the 0-0 tie and briefly gave the Seahawks the lead. However, the Rams scored three times in the fifth and held on for the 3-1 win. Against Bennett on Monday in a make-up game, the Seahawks fell to the Clippers in another tight game, 2-1.
Decatur earned a number-three seed when the Class 3A-East brackets were released on Wednesday and a first-round bye. The Seahawks will face the winner of the first-round matchup between Mt. Hebron and Annapolis. Atholton is the number-two seed on Decatur’s side of the bracket and lurking on the other side it top-seeded Bennett, which has beaten Decatur twice this season.
