Decatur Girls Rebound from 1st Loss

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity lacrosse team rebounded from its first loss of the season last week with an 18-1 rout of North Caroline at home on Monday.

Something had to give last week when the unbeaten Seahawks faced unbeaten Queen Anne’s on the road in a battle of Bayside Conference powerhouses. Queen Anne’s jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and despite a valiant comeback attempt, the Seahawks never fully recovered and suffered their first loss of the season to the Lions, 13-8.

The Lions led early, 5-0, and took a 7-1 lead into the half before the Seahawks got their offense going in the second half. Eileen Hayman, who scored five goals in the game, got Decatur on the board with just over 13 minutes left in the first half to cut the lead to 7-1. In the second half, Allison Beck scored on a nice assist by Blair Yesko to cut the Lions’ lead to 7-2. Yesko then scored her own goal a couple of minutes later to cut the lead to 7-3 with plenty of time left as the game drew closer.

Queen Anne’s ended the Seahawks’ mini-run scoring three of the games’ next four goals to push its lead to 10-4. Hayman took over for a stretch late in the second half, scoring three times to cut the Lions’ lead to 11-8 with just over three minutes left. Queen Anne’s added a couple of late goals to pull away for the 13-8 win.

Decatur did not dwell on its first loss of the season long, however, and routed visiting North Caroline, 18-1, on Monday. The Seahawks scored early and often and built a 15-0 lead by halftime. In the second half, Decatur pulled back on the reins, passing up several easy scoring opportunities, and cruised to the 18-1 win.

With the win on Monday, the Seahawks improved to 5-1 on the season. Decatur plays Easton on the road this afternoon and Cambridge-South Dorchester next Wednesday before closing out the regular season with Wicomico, Bennett and rival Parkside.
