BERLIN- Decatur’s young, but talented varsity baseball team got the 2013 off to a good start last week, beating Pocomoke, 13-0, in a game shortened to five innings.
With several key pieces from last year no longer on the team, Decatur is decidedly young in terms of age but long on experience. Coach Rick Ferro’s team has just three seniors and four juniors, but is loaded with talented underclassmen including a handful of sophomores who saw extended playing time last year as freshmen.
The Seahawks will rely on strong pitching and solid defense at all positions this season and got both in abundance in the season opener at home last Friday against Pocomoke. Freshman Lane Dillon was outstanding on the mound, pitching a complete game shutout while allowing just one hit. Dallas Harrington was one of the stars at the plate with two doubles and two RBIs. Next up for the Seahawks is a home game against Washington next Tuesday.
