BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity softball team routed county rival Pocomoke, 19-4, last Friday in the season opener for both teams.
Featuring a veteran line-up with nine returning players from last year’s team including six starters, the future looks bright for the Seahawks as they embark on the 2013 campaign. Decatur got off to a fast start last week, beating Pocomoke, 19-4, in the home opener. Senior Jessica Iacona was the winning pitcher, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out five. Iacona also helped her own cause at the plate with two hits and an RBI.
The Seahawks got offensive contributions from up and down the line-up with just about everybody getting in on the action. Emma Ditzel had two hits including a home run and three RBIs. Jessica Bunting had two hits and three RBIs, while Beth Laque had two hits and two runs batted in. Lauren Laque also contributed with two hits and an RBI. After the break of the holiday weekend, the Seahawks get back in action on Tuesday with another home game against Washington.
