CITY – An extensive multi-agency, multi-state search for a man reported missing
in the surf near the Ocean City-Fenwick Island line early last Friday morning
was eventually suspended when the alleged victim reported in safe and sound
from a resort hotel.
to police reports, the unidentified man had earlier in the evening celebrated
his birthday at Harpoon Hanna’s restaurant and was last seen allegedly
intoxicated and naked in the surf near the Maryland-Delaware line before he
disappeared. When the unidentified man was reported missing around 1:45 a.m.,
several agencies including the Coast Guard, Delaware Natural Resources Park
Rangers, Ocean City, Fenwick Island and Delaware State Police and Bethany Beach
firefighters began an extensive search of the beach and the ocean from Bethany
to Ocean City with no results.
around 3:15 a.m., law enforcement officials involved in the search received a
cell phone call from the alleged victim reporting he was safe and sound at a
hotel in Ocean City on 64th Street and the massive search effort was
suspended. The probe is ongoing and no charges have been filed, according to
police reports.
