BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity wrestling team hopes to stay on a roll this weekend when the Seahawks participate in the 15th Annual Bob Rowe Delmarva Classic in Salisbury starting this afternoon.

The Seahawks enter the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record including a 3-0 mark in the Bayside Conference after thrashing Bennett, 70-3, last week. Decatur trails Queen Anne’s and Easton in the conference standings, only because the front-runners have had more early season Bayside matches. Although the 15th Annual Bob Rowe Delmarva Classic this weekend is a tournament and the results will not count in the conference standings, the Bayside leaders will be well represented in the event.

Formerly known as the Delmarva Classic, the tournament was renamed this year in honor of Bob Rowe, who coached Wicomico High and Wicomico Middle School wrestling and taught at the latter for over 35 years. Rowe was the tournament director for 12 of its first 13 years. His wife and sons will be on hand at the conclusion of the tournament on Saturday to present trophies to the winners.

The annual tournament will showcase some of the best high school wrestling programs in the region. A total of 16 teams from Maryland and Delaware will be competing on seven mats on both the varsity and junior varsity levels. The tournament gets underway this afternoon starting at 2:45 p.m. at the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center. Matches resume tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. and will continue all day until the final matches in the individual weight classes conclude around 6 p.m.

The impressive field will feature a total of 18 state-ranked wrestlers including a handful from Decatur. In the most current rankings, Decatur’s Dylan Drew is ranked second overall in the state and first in Class 4A-3A at 289 pounds. Bryce Smith is ranked 5th in Class 4A-3A at 189, while Mike Meekins is ranked 5th in Class 4A-3A at 189.
